This is my 5th batch of caneles. I've got it down. These are as simple as they are luscious.

For the first time I've been listening to 1210 radio to hear the Phillies games. I turned the radio on yesterday afternoon and it was set at 1210. I caught a moment of Sean Hannity. Hey I had no idea that grown-ups spoke to other grown-ups that way. Ridiculous fear mongering, generalizing and creepy fundamentalism. The tone blared ignorance as gratingly as the rant. I felt dumber just listening to a few words.

Right now I'm listening to the game and in between innings there are ads for Hannity and Smerconish. The ads use music from the Roots and Weezez. Just wondered if these artists were aware that their creative work is used where fundamentalism rules the day. Imagine ?uestlove challenging Hannity on a few points.

Canele Made Today

I used the recipe from Zucc and Chocolate and then read through the exhaustive thread at egullet where Paula Wolfert herself makes several comments. I ended up with these. They are beautiful looking but not quite right. Still I was pleased. it was my first try and I am no baker. I did use the beeswax*/butter technique in a convection oven.

Outside the lil DiBruno a film crew was staging gear. One of the guys was pirouetting around Montrose St on this techy marvel. In the vid the photographer, Peter Vicami, gives a virtuoso example of his Steadicam Segway skills.

I'm a huge fan of Metropolitan Bakery. These canneles were at the RTM shop. I ate 3 as I walked around and went back for 3 more so my lil lady would get motivated to make some herself. $1.60 each.

Update: Canneles have become the compulsive dish of Autumn.

Gushing Gobs of Green Goo

This critter was munching on a pinus palustris. When I picked it off a jet of green goo gushed from his butt. I moved it over to a poplar tree so it could feed on the invasive, non-native that many builders in Cape May preserve in landscapes.

Faeries at Reading Terminal Market

Today I was relaxing at Old City Coffee in RTM when a Faerie flitted past. Cryptic creatures were gathered for the Faerie Convention.

$10.99 Porterhouse at Whole Foods Market is also a decent buy.

Economic Downturn not on the East Side

At Freemans today these items, Russian enamels, went for about 20X auction estimate. The Kvosh (ladle) went for 60K and the Chalice 220k.

I try and stick with food or marketing topics but today between the Eagles and this pic from the Metro I lost my appetite.


With their fundamentalist poster this toothy duet, from Carson Cali, rep the Paliban. I feel terrorized just viewing them.


Sometimes things just shouldn't be juxtaposed. A food example is Snapple "Made from the best stuff on earth" WTF could they be referring to, corn syrup? Snapple = best at BS.

Springsteen / Obama ........ House of Dreams

Bruce sounded great on the Parkway. He was all poetry and politics, his acoustic set included Thunder Road and closed with This Land is my Land. First, Fast Eddie worked the crowd for a spell then a No Libs Lady who registered voters in the rain introduced Sprinsteen. When Bruce came on stage it was intense like a 60's Be In. The crowd was a mixed age, quite white, (duh, the Boss) completely civilized, tranquil group.
